Plasmonic holographic storage
Abstract:
Ultra-high-density data storage is essential for massive information processing. Plasmonic nanoparticles are considered as one of the most promising platforms on multiplexing optical storage. Plasmonic spectral hole-burning, as a high-efficient photo-energy transformation mode, can be realized utilizing the nanoscale Schottky interface of transition-metal-oxide /noble-metal. In such a system, optical frequency and polarization can be distinguished accurately. In this talk, the development of spectral hole-burning for high-density storage, the basic principle of plasmonic holographic storage, as well as the latest achievements in large-area holographic discs and compact-type holographic memory devices will be introduced.

Biography:
Yichun Liu, Professor of Optoelectronic Functional Materials and Devices, Northeast Normal University (NENU), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice chairman of the Jilin Provincial Association for Science and Technology, member of the International Conference on Luminescence (ICL) Program Committee (chairman of the 2020 Conference), member of the Advisory Committee of the International Conference on II-VI Compound Materials, deputy editor-in-chief of “InfoMat”, winner of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and Chinese Academy of Sciences Hundred Talents Program. Prof. Liu won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award (ranked 1) twice in 2015 and 2019. His research interests include optical/electronic memory, wide-band-gap semiconductors and short-wavelength light-emitting devices, as well as luminescence and Raman scattering in solids for bio-detection.

Holographic beam-shaping with high accuracy and stability for material laser processing
Abstract:
Holographic beam shaping is dynamically performed by a computer-generated hologram (CGH) displayed on a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator (LCOS-SLM). It is very useful in a variety of applications, especially material laser processing. It provides high-processing throughput and high light-use efficiency according to a proper laser beam distribution. In the practical uses, industrial engineers and scientific researchers who are not expert in optics will face to some implementation difficulties including the design and alignment of the optical system, and a software of the CGH optimization, and especially static and dynamic imperfections that exist in the optical system. In order to solve the above subjects, a method that performs the optimization of the CGH in the optical system, called as an in-system optimization, have been applied as a core technology.

Biography:
Yoshio Hayasaki received PhD from University of Tsukuba, Japan in March 1993. He was a researcher in RIKEN from April 1993 to March 1995. He was an associate professor in The University of Tokushima from April 1995 to March 2008. At present, he is a professor in Utsunomiya University, Center for Optical Research & Education (CORE). He is an optical system designer in the fields of information photonics, optical metrology, and laser material processing. Recently, He is focused to integrate both holographic laser processing system and holographic optical imaging system. He is a fellow member of SPIE and OPTICA, and a member of Optical Society of Japan (OSJ), Japanese Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), Laser Society of Japan (LSJ), Japan Laser Processing Society (JLPS), and Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ).

High contrast grating VCSELs for optical communications and 3D sensing
Abstract:
Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are low-cost enabling laser sources for many applications including optical communications, 3D sensing and optical imaging. In this talk I will review Berxel’s recent advances and commercialization of high-speed 106 Gbps PAM4 VCSELs for datacom applications and high efficiency VCSEL arrays for 3D sensing applications. I will review recent results of high contrast grating (HCG) VCSELs. With a fixed, high selection ratio in polarization, we show a novel polarization structured light 3D sensor with high depth accuracy in scenes with multiple reflecting surfaces. We show that HCG VCSELs exhibit fewer modes, enabling 3~5 times transmission distance over OM3 multimode fibers for 106G PAM4 modulation signal. Finally, I will also discuss future prospects for advanced applications.

Twisted Light Communications and Beyond
Abstract:
Helically-phased or twisted light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) that exploit the spatial structure of light waves, have given rise to many applications ranging from optical manipulation to optical communications. In this talk, we will give an overview of twisted light communications and beyond. First, we will introduce concepts, fundamentals, techniques, devices, 2D/3D photonic integrated chips for spatial light field manipulation, including twisted light, vector light, and more general structured light with spatially variant amplitude, phase and polarization profiles. Second, we will show recent advances in twisted light communications via OAM modulation, OAM multiplexing and OAM multicasting in diverse scenarios, including free-space optical communications, fiber-optic communications, underwater optical communications, and chip-enabled optical interconnects. Third, we will present structured light communications in complex media. Fast auto-alignment systems, turbulence compensation methods, strong scattering resistance techniques, and non-line-of-sight communications will be discussed. Twisting electromagnetic waves for communications beyond light waves will be introduced. Moreover, we will also show recent progress in extended applications with structured light beyond communications, such as optical trapping, optical tweezers, imaging, microscopy, sensing, metrology, and quantum science. Finally, the prospects and challenges of twisted light communications and beyond in the future will be discussed.
